Rolling-Code Opener Upgrade
Why Fixed Code Is a Problem
An opener made before the late 1990s transmits the same radio code every time you press the button. Record it once and you can send it back later, and the door opens.
Rolling code fixed this. The remote and the receiver agree on a sequence, so each press uses a new code and the previous one is dead. A recording is worthless.
Ahlanart upgrades openers across Long Beach.
How to Tell What You Have
Age is the fastest guide. If the unit went in during the 1990s or earlier, assume fixed code. Manufacturers began labelling rolling-code units with their own branding for it, usually visible on the motor housing or in the manual.
If you cannot tell, read us the model number off the sticker on the motor head and we will tell you over the phone.
What the Upgrade Involves
Sometimes the whole opener is replaced. Sometimes a rolling-code receiver on the existing motor is enough, which is cheaper and worth asking about if the mechanical side of the opener is sound.
Either way the job includes:
- Clearing every device currently in memory, so old remotes stop working.
- Pairing only the remotes and keypads you actually hold.
- Setting a fresh keypad code.
- Setting travel limits and force settings to your door.
- Testing both safety systems before we leave.
Battery Backup Is Not Optional Here
California has required battery backup on garage door openers sold or installed in the state since 1 July 2019. It came out of wildfire evacuations where people could not open their doors after the power was cut.
So a replacement opener includes it. Worth knowing the battery is a consumable: expect three to five years, less in a hot garage, and test it by cutting the breaker and operating the door on the wall button.
While the Opener Is Open
Two things worth doing in the same visit, because the labour is already there.
The emergency release. If the cord can be hooked from outside through the top seal, a rolling-code opener has not helped you. Shield it.
The door balance. We disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand. If it does not hold position, the springs are wrong and the new opener will be doing work it was never meant to do.
